Texprint provide an opportunity for designers to develop beyond higher education. Aiming to promote the best upcoming UK graduate textile designers, Texprint offer a range of opportunities by selecting, mentoring and supporting.

Every June the work of over 200 textile designers at BA and MA levels, is selected and submitted by their tutors for Texprint. Each candidate is interviewed after having their work examined. Held over three weeks the interviews are based in a tutorial-style and led by Texprint Creative Director Oeter Ring-Lefevre. Applicants are judged on the standard of their creative work, their training and their ability to make full use of the opportunities offered.

The judging panel for Texprint 2011 comprised of:
Stuart Stockdale — design director of the great British women’s and men’s brand Jaeger.
Sue Timney — textile designer, interior decorator and stylist, founder of Timney-Fowler.
David Shah — founder of View Publications which publishes the industry bible Textile View.
Orla Kiely — the creative force behind the eponymous interiors and fashion brand.
Sophie Steller — knitwear studio chief and head of creative development at SPINEXPO.

 This year there were 24 carefully selected designers, who were presented to press, sponsors, key-decision makers and leading creative’s in the fashion and interior market. The experts reviewed the work of the designers, who specialize in working with print, knit, weave, stitch and mixed media. Four special winners out of the 24 were the chosen, and each receives a £1,000 prize, sponsored by The Clothworkers’ Foundation and Liberty Art Fabrics.

 David Shah commented on the winners’ work on behalf of the judges: “There is some very impressive work here. The future of the European textiles is about craft and sustainability and originality – it’s exciting to see some much great new design.”

 The winners were as follows:

Body Prize/The Best Fashion Fabric – David Bradley from the Royal College of Art.

Space Prize/The best interiors fabricHarriet Toogood from the University of Brighton 

Pattern Prize – Emma Shipley from the Royal College of Art

Colour Prize – Chloe Hamblin from the Chelsea College of Art

 In addition to these four winners, Sophie Steller chose six further designers to take part in the SPINEXPO Travel Prize:

Karina Klucnika — from London Metropolitan University
Harri Batty— from Buckinghamshire New University
Catherine Tremellen — from the Royal College of Art
Lauren Bowker — from the Royal College of Art
Amy Jo Lewis — from the Royal College of Art

The 10 winning designers will travel to Shanghai, between Spetember 6-8th 2011 to thank the judges fore their careful deliberation and expertise.Following the trip to Shanghai, all 24 designers will present their work at Indigo, Paris, the textile design exhibition which is part of Première Vision Pluriel, September 20-22th, 2011. While at Indigo, the designers’ work will be judged for the Woolmark Texprint Award in support of Campaign for Wool — a new prize recognizing design excellence in fabrics created with 60% or more Merino wool.
