The PwC found that between January and May 2010, an average 20 stores a day were shut on the high street. RCapital suggest that a few factors are to blame, with internet shopping being a large factor in the equation. Jamie Constable, RCapital’s chief executive says “With VAT payments pending, rents going up and margin erosion you’ve got increasing costs everywhere and competition against online businesses.” Their research indicates that chains with 50-500 shops will be worst hit.

With so many shops disappearing from the high street, it seems that e-tail is now a major player in making money for businesses. According to the Office of National Statistics, the second quarter of 2011 saw 20.3% of all retail sales occur over the internet, with clothing store sales +0.2% on the same quarter the previous year. A recent survey carried out also found that 9 out of 10 consumers had purchased online within the past 6 months.
