Frugal-living Quaker, Lance, co-founded Soul of Africa in 2004 with Mike and Sarah Geyde of Froggie shoes, a South African company. The not-for-profit company have applied the craft of making fine shoes to the need for African women to make a living for themselves.
“Black Africans have pride, and will not take charity,” said Mr Clarke. “They need sustainable skills and to work for their living. So I co-founded Soul of Africa to employment for African people, and to make a difference using the profits made. All profits are fed back into community projects such as abandoned babies and HIV awareness. So far the charity has raised £1.8 million.
The Clarke shoe-making heritage is clear in the Soul of Africa products. The shoes are all lovingly hand-stitched in quality leather, beautiful to look at and heavenly to wear. You can feel the African sunshine and spirit in them.”

The shoes are available from www.soulofafricashoes.co.uk from the websites of Clarks and Next, and in Clarks shops across the country.
