Best of the Rest – by Adrienne Bush

Over the past few weeks I have been reviewing window displays to see what makes an appealing look. This week I came across a few store windows that caught my attention and I am sure you will agree when you see them. The designer’s creativity and unique ideas are why these displays have been chosen as the best dressed windows in London.

First on the list is Choice which is currently promoting the July and August sales. The window displays contain mannequins dressed in brown parchment paper. The paper is wrapped around each mannequin to resemble a garment, but loosely enough to make it look like a quick job to cover the figures. Sale signs are also posted in the window to help explain the unique window design. The display is both humorous and eye catching. It implies that the sale is so fantastic that all the garments in the display had to be removed so customers could buy them.

Second on the list is Karen Millen located off Bond Street. The window design is simple and elegant, but the moving display adds interest to the look. There is a central mirrored tower surrounded by mannequins. Each mannequin is positioned in a different way; some are standing while others are sitting. The garments complement each other while the movement catches the attention of passing customers. By using black and white as the dominant colours, the designer has created a dramatic, yet sophisticated window display.

Third is Michal Negrin in Windsor. The store has opted for a Victorian look whose nostalgic feel compliments the merchandise nicely. Curtains surround the windows to create a framed look for the mannequins. Peach, pink, ivory, and blue are used because the subtle colours enhance rather than take away from the display. The chandeliers hanging in the windows give an intimate feel to the store. The window display also incorporates roses, angels, and other feminine objects in the design to appeal to their target market. The overall feeling of the display is both romantic and nostalgic.

Last on the list of the best windows is Bershka on Oxford Circus. The window display has a childlike feel that appeals to their younger target market. Life size toys such as paper dolls and stackable figures draw customers attention to the display. The mannequins sport the latest look in fashions and are positioned in a relaxing way. Their mannerisms reflect the behaviour of teenagers and young adults today. The bright colours and giant toys add interest to the look while creating a unique theme. The window display takes on a youthful, fun, and imaginative feeling that attracts the interest of passing shoppers.

As you head out to enjoy the last few weeks of the summer sales be sure to check out these window displays. You might just find the perfect outfit to take on holiday!
