The Almodovar of Fashion
Ziad Ghanem’s fashion life is very much a work in progress it’s constantly evolving and shifting with the times. Not one to rest on his laurels for long Ziad once again has been on his travels introducing his work to new markets overseas. “I’ve just got back from showing my new collection at the MID_E Arts Show in San Sebastian,” he says enthusiastically. (It turns out Ziad was treated to a heavy dose of celebrity medicine – with TV and press all wanting to know his life story.)
The MID_E show is just in its 3rd edition but already attracts international artists from a wide range of disciplines from photography to video art to music DJ’s and performance. Work on show this time around came from the likes of artist and illustrator – Silvia Prada, photographer Daniel Riera, a selection of video works by fashion creators: AF Vandevorst, Raf Simons, Martin Margiela, C.Neeon – plus many more.
When MID_E invited Ziad to show at this year’s installment (November 05) he was happy to accept. “I was really impressed with the artists involved it’s also a fantastic place to connect with other creative people,” Ziad comments. At first Ziad thought about putting on a kind of installation but after much consideration he thought – ‘no, my work is all about the clothes’ and therefore stuck with a straight up and down catwalk show.
Previewing his Spring/Summer 06 Cold Britannia collection Ziad’s work now focuses on made-to-order bespoke designs, it’s this demi-couture approach that he feels is the way forward for his label. Of course all those signature Ghanem elements are present – from patchwork and prints to humorous messages. (Favourite message of the season: ‘Life is pleasure for the beautiful body’ on the front of the garment, followed by ‘Life is pain for the beautiful mind’ on the back.) These are combined with an eclectic range of Union Jacks, couture silhouettes, mesh and lace layers that can be worn a number of ways.
Well received by the audience the Spanish press dubbed Ziad as the Almodvar of fashion – a man who takes morbid subjects and reinterprets them into colourful thought provoking designs. This amuses Ziad somewhat, although he takes it as an extreme compliment. “Showing somewhere different has opened brand new doors for me, I was very impressed with the entire event and my personal show favourite was Miss Bianca Fox, an International transsexual performer,” he says rounding up the experience.
So what next for Mr Ziad Ghanem? He’s not letting on too much but has a few projects on the go as we speak. It’s a matter of ‘all will be revealed in due course’ until then I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
