Fashion For Good Amsterdam

01-12-2024

Moving the fashion industry in a positive direction is of fundamental importance to the FashionCapital team. So when we see an organisation or a brand doing just that we like to shout about them from the rooftops.

One such inspirational organisation is Fashion For Good situated in the heart of Amsterdam. Funded by the C&A Foundation, Fashion For Good acts as an events hub to promote thought, conversation, inspiration and innovation. The three-floor venue presents special film screenings, talks and workshops and exhibitions and invites all to collaborate and join the debate.

The aim is to make fashion a force for good. As a global initiative the movement reimagines how fashion is designed, made, worn, and reused. Taking on board innovative leaders Fashion For Good demonstrates alternative ways that in turn pave a better way for the fashion industry to work and our planet to flourish.

The key five Fashion for Good initiatives are:

Good
Materials

Good
Economy

Good
Energy

Good
Water

Good
Lives

The ground floor currently consists of an exhibition full of quotes and slogans about the industry as it operates today…

MORE THAN 80 BILLION PIECES OF CLOTHING ARE PRODUCED WORLDWIDE EACH YEAR. OF THESE PIECES, 75% WILL END UP IN LANDFILLS. – GREENPEACE, 2016

‘The making of one pair of leather shoes releases the same amount of carbon dioxide as a 38 kilometer car trip.’ – 3312 MIT, 2015

While the first floor introduces the visitor to innovative leaders in their field such as: Founder of Ananas Anam, Dr. Carmen Hijosa, and her sustainable textile company that utilises pineapple leaf fibres:

“If we make a product, we are responsible throughout the supply chain for the consequences of making this product.”

As well as asking visitors to take part and add their ideas to a wall of collective comments.

Down on the lower level daily film screenings take place, the first showing of the day is ‘Frontline Fashion’ providing an insight into the annual Eco Chic design competition where 10 emerging designers from around the globe create and put forward their recycled and sustainable design ideas. Later this year, the finalists from the 2017 Eco Chic competition will exhibit their designs at the Fashion For Good venue.

Continuing into 2018 the Fashion for Good Experience will showcase the Good Factory to reveal an industry where every piece of the process is sustainable, perfect and open to the public.
