Newsletter 16th July 2014

Dear all,

Exciting times, our mission has always been to educate, train and support and now we are delighted to be involved with the development of the Fashion Technology Academy situated next to our current factory. Our CEO Jenny Holloway attended a final board meeting last night and all has been approved, please read on to find out more…

Fashion Enter & Haringey at the Forefront of Production Skills Training

After success with the Stitching Academy we are pleased to announce the offer of further skills training and development with the Fashion Technology Academy.

With support from Haringey council and ASOS.com the Fashion Technology Academy will see nearly 3,000 people given the opportunity to earn NVQ qualifications during the next five years.

Haringey Council will invest nearly £570,000 to overhaul an industrial unit that builds on the success of the current pilot scheme – which launched last year and has trained 50 people with an NVQ – to expand and meet its potential.

By 2019, the academy will have capacity for 1,620 training places per year, helping more people follow in the footsteps of graduates who set up their own businesses or found work at firms including ASOS.com and Marks & Spencer.

Figures show that employment in fashion and textiles manufacturing increased by 15 per cent between 2009 and 2012, bucking the London-wide fall of 13 per cent in the same period. The value of British exports in the industry has risen by 37 per cent to £9.6billion in the last five years.

Councillor Joe Goldberg, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Social Inclusion and Sustainability, said:

“I’m proud that here in Haringey we are at the cutting edge of a fashion manufacturing boom, and we are equipping our residents with the skills they need to secure long-term employment.

“It’s exciting that projects like this that create jobs, apprenticeships and training in industries that capture the imagination of Haringey’s young talent are happening in our borough.”

Jenny Holloway, CEO of Fashion Enter, added:

“Haringey will be at the very forefront of skills development with the Fashion Technology Academy.

“With the return to on-shore garment manufacturing in the UK, Haringey will be the first in the country to offer real skills training, in all elements of fashion, from our factory at Crusader Estate.

“The Fashion Technology Academy is in partnership with Haringey Council and ASOS.com – a real business partnership that will enable future generations to be trained in design and manufacturing.”

Glenthorne School Visit

On Thursday 10th July, Zoe Barrow was invited along to Glenthorne School to attend their Aspirations Career Day. Designed to open student’s eyes to a variety of different careers and future pathways, including further education and alternatives to university, Zoe was invited to talk about Fashion Enter’s training opportunities, in particular The Apprenticeship Programme.

A full-on day, students arrived at 8:30 for a 9am start, to take part in 4 activities throughout the day, covering a variety of different career-related topics and activities.

Zoe took part in the apprenticeship workshop, flying the flag for fashion and textiles apprenticeship programme. Zoe has first-hand experience of completing an apprenticeship was onsite to give students a direct insight to the programme, using a variety of case studies and sharing her own personal experiences of being an apprentice in the fashion world.

Beginning the workshop with an informative presentation and Q&A, for many students it was the first time on hearing about the apprenticeship programme. A popular talking point was how an apprenticeship programme can progress into a future career, using examples of famous celebrities that launched their career via an apprenticeship.

“The Glenthorne Aspirations Day was definitely one of the most well-organised career workshops I’ve attended, it was great having a workshop completely dedicated to speaking about and spreading the word of apprenticeships, as well as the opportunity to meet so many different students – we had a good mixture of both girls and boys, which is a change!” Zoe Barrow

“Zoe had a healthy number of “customers” throughout each workshop and proved to be a very good ambassador for your industry. I would be very keen to invite Zoe (or colleagues) to similar events in the future.” – Chris Jones, Manager at Sutton Education Business Partnership

Over 50% of the students reported that the day had given them a strong idea of the work and career they would like to progress into the future, and 28% of students reported that once finishing school they would be interested in going on to take part in an apprenticeship.

Boutique Pick of the Week

A little birdie told us that a heatwave is on its way so now’s the time to take advantage of wearing those light-as-air fabrics and bold summer prints. We particularly like these easy-to-wear, fluid culottes that feature a tropical palm print.
