Whether denoting culture, class, occupation or simply making a statement, hats are often key to defining a look and reveal a great deal about the wearer. ‘HATS: An Anthology by Stephen Jones’ is an exhibition currently being held at the V&A museum which explores the fascinating history of headgear and the art of millinery.

Stephen Jones

Stephen Jones, originally from Cheshire, opened his first millinery salon in 1980. Since then, he has become one of the world’s most eminent and influential milliners and continues to collaborate with both clients and his team in Covent Garden to produce fantastic and fanciful hats. Hailed by John Galliano as ‘the frosting to any collection he touches’, Jones’ increasingly innovative headwear has attracted the attention of fashion designers and celebrities alike and he has designed hats for Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior and Madonna, to name but a few.

The excellent exhibitions held at the V&A first sparked Jones’ interest in the world of fashion and their archive of historical hats has been a constant source of inspiration for him. Therefore Jones’ is paying homage to the museum in his exhibition, which documents the inspiration behind designing hats; their manufacture; and the important relationship between the milliner’s salon and the client. Not forgetting, of course, a fabulous array of headpieces which may well inspire design talent of the future.
