The Young Apprentices Left to right. Chanice, Shernice, Elisabeth, Natasha and Shani-que
Saturday 26th March 2011
Today the Young Apprentices started a new project of recycling a coat. The aim of the brief was to redesign a coat through the use of recycling, with a modern day twist.
Katriona Lea from the London College of Fashion came into the workshop on Saturday to meet the Young Apprentices and to explain the concept and theme of the design.

The Young Apprentices began the project by creating a mood board for the coat, ensuring they incorporated all the influences and styles which paved the way for the brief of the design given.
Once the mood board had been created the Young Apprentices were soon busy unpicking the lining of the coat which would then be recycled and used for embellishments on the front surface of the coat. The coat was then cut to a more suitable length.

The Young Apprentices just completed cutting a new length for the coat.
The original lining pattern pieces was traced onto card and re-cut using new fabric. The Young Apprentices then each took it in turns to cut the lining pattern pieces and over-lock all the seams using the over-locking machine, whilst being supervised. I can happily say all the students operated the over-locking machine with precision and due care. The over-locked seams looked excellent.

The next step was embellishing. The individual paisley style shapes created were spring- boarded from an original patterned design. The Young Apprentices brainstormed the best possible lay out for the paisley shapes, pinned them all into position on the lapels of the coat and then carefully began to hand-stitch each piece, using blanket stitch.

The Young Apprentices Saturday lesson came to a close…….
Overall it has been a very good day, wherein the Young Apprentices have undertaken a project which they have all thoroughly enjoyed, had fun whilst they learnt and all have worked well as part of a team.
Well done ladies.
The coat will be on exhibition at Goldsmith College ….viewing dates will be added as soon as available.
Stay tuned and read more next week.
