Skills and Interests

Job Requirements

Good communication skills are important for a dresser, you have to listen carefully to what each actor’s needs are and fulfill them by coordinating with other staff members and outside sources. Although you do not normally create costumes like the costume designer, you have to have good sewing and pressing abilities to maintain and repair the costumes. Excellent organizational skills will enable you to store and organize costumes in an orderly manner so they are readily available during performances. A dresser needs to have a good eye for color, style and fashion history to assemble outfits that accurately depict the different eras of the stories being told. Having a degree in fashion textiles or with a background relating to theater production, will help you on your way to becoming a dresser. Like other job roles, it may be a good idea to apply for internships if you have no relevant practical experience.

Opportunities

You will learn how to cope meeting different people, and maybe even famous actors. Sometimes you may be asked to travel to various places. Promotions to positions such as wardrobe coordinator, wardrobe supervisor, costume designer or production designer are frequently available to dressers. These opportunities greatly depend on the size and stability of the company for which you work. The salary is generally dependent on how large the organization you are working for is.
