Delivery Day – Tracy Robinson

27-09-2007

How to start your own business and succeed.

By Tracy Robinson

Well this story starts with not a very creative name at all…Tracy Robinson. At the tender age of she was given a fashion wheel for Christmas and knew that from that day on, she wanted to become a  “Fashion Designer.”

As soon as she left school she enrolled at Croydon College and studied a ND in Fashion Design and Pattern Cutting, she then went on to further her education with a HND in Fashion Design and Illustration.

Tracy worked hard, but partied harder and left college and began her journey to her chosen career. The long way around!

She tried her hand at most things and came out with a CV jammed packed full of basic IT, admin and customer service skills. With a touch of publishing thrown in.

Tracy soon reached the road she was destined for, by meeting Jenny Holloway who was then a Consultant working as a Project Manager of the London Fashion Forum,

Tracy was interviewed for the role of Secteriat; she didn’t know what the job role meant or understood what she really had to do but she did know that she wanted the job badly!

She was the first candidate that Jenny interviewed, and they hit it off immediately. Following a two week period of waiting for other interviewees Tracy was given the job and was soon promoted to Marketing & Events Co-ordinator; this role was much better suited for Tracy’s skills.

Apart from learning the skills that the position required Tracy learnt her job inside out and back to front. She was a quick learner and came up with new and exciting plans continuously. With a never say never attitude Tracy progressed quickly up the LFF ladder and ended working on major projects such as Profile, the LFF magazine and the retail boutiques too.

With the guidance from her two role models, David Jones and Jenny Holloway, the experience at LFF gave her the knowledge, confidence and determination to set up her own business, and for that she will be truly grateful.

With the closure of the LFF Tracy relaised that it was time to be master of her own destiny and worked on a new concept for fashion today.

Now director of Girls Night In, Tracy has found her niche organising fashion events. Girls Night In, have built boutiques for names such as Martini and Oceans thirteen and have a sample sale (In the bag) which is set to be the largest accessory sample sale in London, hosting names such as Balenciaga, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, D&G and Jimmy Choo, to name a few.

During this time Tracy has continued to work with Jenny at Fashion Enter and Tracy recognizes that the great stides made would not have been possible without the platform of Fashion Enter and the help and advice given.

As part of the Getting It Right First Time programme headed by Fashion Enter Tracy has been a guest speaker to students informing them of important business gems of information to ensure that the students leave college on the right path. The feedback from the students, especially from Croydon College was outstanding as Tracy spoke from the heart and with passion.

The attitude is one of “can do” with a steely grit and determination that makes every student realise that there is a whole world out there waiting to be conquered! Tracy showed students how this can be achieved on a shoestring budget.

Girls Night In’s collections from Soo Lee, Yumi plus many more can be found in a concession at Croydons Fashion Enter and will soon be available in the new Barking store.
