BA (Hons) Fashion

23-01-2006

Behind many fashion labels you will find a graduate from UCLan, for example: TopShop, Oasis, Wallis, Reebok, Adams, Fake, Burberry, Ted Baker, River Island, Next, Matthew Williamson, Anna Scholtz, PPQ.  This is why the University has such high standing with today’s fashion industry, who have continued to support the industrial work placement element of the course for over 25 years.

UCLan has a strong tradition of commitment to innovative garment design, and development of in-depth research skills, which we believe produces competent, creative individual designers who are very employable.

This is a four-year, full-time BA(Hons) Fashion design course with sandwich placement.  Areas covered over the four year course include: Research Skills, Design Development, Pattern Cutting – Traditional & Experimental, Professional Production Techniques, Knitwear Design, Womenswear Design, Menswear Design, Sportswear Design, Live Projects with Industry, Fashion Illustration & Presentation Techniques, CAD Design, Trend Prediction, Fabric Exploration, Preparation for Placement, and Design History.

To be able to gain a degree with a sandwich course a student must successfully complete an approved 26-week paid work placement in a fashion-related area, although in our experience students often complete two work placements, with different companies, to be able to compare different sides of the industry.

Regular shows, exhibitions and educational trips are important on the course, and help to keep us competitive in the growing global market place.  Student work has been shown in the UK and Europe, for example BBC’s The Clothes Show, London Graduate Fashion Week and the global touring Fashion Show, 40 Degrees, Pitti Filati in Florence, Expofil and Premiere Vision in Paris and recently in Beijing, China.

UCLan’s Art and Design subject area, which includes Fashion, received an Excellent rating of 22 out of 24 in a recent visit by government auditors (QAA).
