What’s it all about?
Leeds College of Art & Design is one of the few colleges in the country to offer a specialist millinery course, and are establishing a growing reputation in the area of hat design and making. You will learn professional and innovative techniques for producing a range of hats, together with design and presentational skills. At the end of the course you will be awarded the BTEC HNC Fashion & Textiles (Millinery).

What will the course do for me?
If you’re working in industry or want to increase your existing knowledge and skills, the Edexcel BTEC Higher National Certificate is a two-year course which will enable you to achieve a recognised qualification without having to embark on a full-time course of study. Your College-based studies are designed to directly complement the experience you gain in the workplace. The courses are also ideal for those working on a freelance basis to obtain professional qualifications.
What does the course include?
You will learn to produce a range of hats from basic soft flat-pattern to blocked hats and model millinery, for private business, the fashion industry, or particular applications such as theatre or television. You’ll also acquire the skills to design and present your ideas effectively on paper, using illustrative techniques.
First year
Millinery and Headdresses, Drawing Techniques and Approaches, Visual Communication, Historical and Contextual Referencing, Millinery Materials
Understanding.
Second year
Research and Development for Millinery, Design Realising a Millinery Collection,
Critical Study, Professional Practice and Development, Professional Studies.
Real life briefs
You will be encouraged to enter competitions and to exhibit your work whenever possible. In 2006 live projects included, Skills Challenge – Design a Hat for a Celebrity Wedding, Headdresses for Eventium Charity Fashion Ball at the Royal Armouries, Bridal Buyers Magazine competition for a bridal headpiece and Hats for the Knitting & Stitching Show in Harrogate.
In 2005, two students were selected by Yorkshire Tea and the National Railway Museum to design high profile hats for Ascot in York. Another student won the BBC ‘Design a Hat for Ascot’ competition. Also in 2005, a group of students were selected for the What’s Hot? exhibition at the National Hat Museum in Stockport. The exhibition promotes the latest millinery creations and specialist hat designers.

Entry requirements
Standard requirements:
You should be at least 18 years old, with either a National Diploma, National Certificate or AVCE in a related area, A Levels and/or a Diploma in Foundation Studies and examples of your work.
Mature entry requirements:
Applications from mature students, aged 21 and over are welcome. Your motivation and potential, plus previous achievements and experience within the clothing/fashion industry will all be taken into consideration.
How long will it take?
Two years, part-time.

£600 per year.

Materials costs are approximately £100.
