Goldsmiths Introduces MA in Fashion
19-09-2013
The pioneering programme at Goldsmiths, University of London will examine the evolving roles and practices of the fashion industry
with the understanding that the contemporary culture of fashion calls for creative practitioners – designers, writers, thinkers and curators – who actively seek to challenge traditional boundaries. Goldsmiths prides itself on its innovative and critical approach, and students will be encouraged to immerse themselves in its wider intellectual environment in order to deepen their understanding of the cultural and creative infrastructure surrounding fashion.
Speaking in support of the new MA in Fashion at her former university, Mary Quant said: “Goldsmiths was, and still is, the most wonderful place to study. It’s a place where creativity and new thinking can truly flourish. This new fashion course encapsulates this completely and is a really exciting opportunity to look at the industry with a critical and enquiring eye, challenging the status quo and offering a fresh
alternative for taking fashion further.”
Academics leading the course include fashion researcher Ruby Hoette, who joins Goldsmiths from Parsons The New School of Design in New York, and renowned cultural and fashion commentator Professor Angela McRobbie.
Professor McRobbie said: “Fashion and Goldsmiths have always been synonymous, from Constance Howard – arguably the most influential British pioneer in textile design of her generation – to the College’s list of illustrious fashion alumni, right down to the creative attire of its students. This course combines this rich heritage with our reputation for challenging the status quo and tackling key issues
head on – shaping those who will go on to lead the fashion industry of the future.”
Ruby Hoette added: “Goldsmiths has an incredibly strong reputation when it comes to textiles and research. This unique environment is the ideal setting for the new MA. The course will challenge students to explore fashion in context, through the intersection of theory and practice based approaches, positioning them to shape a future in fashion that is innovative, inclusive and interdisciplinary.”
