Retail Scene

18-08-2008

British Retail Consortum reported sales down 0.9% in July, with the CBI reporting volumes down for the fourth consecutive month in July. The three month trend is the weakest since November 2005. Shop prices have risen overall by 3.2% in July, with non-food prices just beginning to show the first shoots of inflation, although in the electricals and clothing sub categories prices remain deflationary. bssa Quarterly Sales Monitor reported a dip in sales of 1.8% for the second quarter compared with last year with sales running down 1.7% year to date.

One piece of good news was that John Lewis Partnership   reported sales up 3.7% in the first week of August on the back of strong back-to-school clothing and white goods, despite home wares being down 8%, reflecting the subdued housing market.

Retail rents have been much in the news recently with retail heavy weights Lord Harris and Sir Philip Green amongst others lambasting the property developers for continuing to demand rent three months in advance despite the current economic difficulties. The Association has also featured in the trade media in support of the Mayor of London's demand for independent retailers to be included in future developments in the City.

The BSSA was present at the recent Pure fashion show where despite organisers Emap reporting attendance up 5%, Olympia appeared very subdued. bssa will be present at the Top Draw show at the same location over the period 14-16 September and will be running a series of workshops daily.
