Trend Alert – Socks and shoes
20-04-2005
Last year it was about the bright and not so fantastic plastic jewellery. This however, we are heading south to your feet and add a bit of va va vroom to your tootsies. Yes, socks with shoes. Remember when you used to team your pretty open toed shoes with little frilled shocks, and back then we could get away with it without being chased by the fashion police. However, according to Chanel, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton, there isn’t any other way to be wearing your new fab wedges this summer.
This is a tricky trend to follow as it has the tendency to 1) make your legs look like tree trunks 2) make you look like your trying to re create your school days. So pull your socks up girlfriend and follow my simple steps on how to pull it off in style.
v Your socks must be in really good condition and be brand spanking clean. No holes or grey tints as you will look like the local nut rather than the local icon.
v Clashing is the key to achieve this look. If your socks are floral, mix and match with brocade or brown leather wedge. Contrast your socks against your shoe and make them stand out a mile.
v Think funky, chunky and fabulous. Think of it as a style statement, not a comfort thing. You may feel a twinge of embarrassment when you strut down the street and get a few disconcerning looks. But trust me, it isn’t because you look silly, it is because you look like a cool cat who as just fell off the catwalk. Don’t be afraid to be individual.
v Avoid dainty kitten heels with delicate straps. Go for solid, chunky wedges with buckles and rivets. The chunkier the better.
v Pick your favourite vintage footwear and team them with the most expensive socks you can afford. The beauty of this is because you will never run into someone wearing the same thing, which is always a god thing.
v Always wear your socks rolled down a little because this doesn’t only give you more length to your legs, but it also takes away the school uniform vibe!
v Strut around with them in confidence and be fabulous!
So there you have it. Although it has an 80’s vibe to it, you should dare to bear as it could be a lot worse next summer. Who knows what the next trend will bring so why not embrace it before it fades out. Fashion is all about expressing yourself so put your best foot forward and dig out those socks from the back of the wardrobe. Trust me, you’ll never want to wear tight with your shoes again!
