Blazing Ahead

Having already hit the high street, the blazer is one welcome wardrobe addition which will last through this season and well into the next.

The perfect item for teaming with summers must-have tailored shorts, ideally the blazer should be of shrunken proportions, just grazing hip-level, with bracelet-length sleeves.  Single-breasted, two-button, two-pocket styles are key, with contrast trim detailing and feature collars. Pockets work as welt or flap styles although patch-pockets with chunky trims help create directional school-inspired looks.

Having been interpreted in the form of Alexander McQueen’s sailor-schoolgirl styling for spring/summer 05, the blazer was difficult to ignore on the catwalks for autumn/winter 05/05.  Designers such as Cacharel, Jil Stuart and Balenciaga, all incorporated the garment into their collections.

Vertical stripes create English summertime appeal, while navy and white combinations look fresh as a nautical trend is re-visited.  Puffed sleeveheads lend a more feminine edge to the blazer, while metallic yarns woven into the garment is in keeping with a decorative metallic trend we have seen so much of as late.

Versatile in terms of styling options, the blazer is easy to adapt.  Add badges and brooches to lapels, accessorise with a skinny scarf or wear sleeves pushed up for a cool eighties vibe.
