The London Look – Adrienne Bush
The London Look
Where does the inspiration for designs come from? At the Museum of London that is exactly the question a new exhibit is attempting to answer. Until July 10th you have the opportunity to explore the evolution of fashion from the streets to the catwalk.
The exhibit explores the history of fashion in London and how it has evolved to the look we are familiar with today. The collection includes pieces from the 1800s to the present and features looks from such famous designers as Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, John Cavanagh, and Alexander McQueen. The London Look is based on recognizing designers for their innovativeness and the ability they have to inspire fellow designers. Their ability to transform traditional influences into new designs has led to the London looks we see on the runway today.

The museum takes the exhibit a step further by creating a unique atmosphere with the displays. It feels as if you just stepped onto the runway with the white walkways, overhead lighting, and music playing in the background. There are also interactive activities including video clips, recordings, fabric samples, and replica clothing you can try on.
The overall experience of the exhibit is one of true inspiration. Standing in the presence of work by some of London’s best designers and seeing how their work has influenced current trends is truly amazing. There is information on the beginning of runway shows, the influence of the Second World War on fashion, the development of department stores and boutiques, and how the tailored look London is so famous for has changed over the years.
There will be a special presentation Thursday, 7 July starting at 6:00 pm. The presentation will include a designer, fashion stylist, and trend setter discussing their roles in London fashion. For more information on the Off Centre event go to www.renaissanceone.com. Museum admission costs £5, and the hours are from 10:00 am to 5:50 pm Monday through Saturday.
