Skirting the Issue
A fresher alternative to the assortment of peasant and ankle-skimming gypsy skirts dominating the high street, newer skirt silhouettes are shorter and feature frills, tiers and most directionally – voluminous layers.
Generally the look is not directly 50’s-styled as hemlines are cut above the knee creating cute and quirky effects. Multi-layers of net underskirts, particularly in contrast colours look directional and help create voluminous silhouettes. For less extreme looks, ruffles and tiers create girly appeal without appearing overly feminine. Teaming shorter, fuller skirts with dance-tights or leggings creates a more contemporary and edgy effect.
Mini tiered styles reference 80’s ra-ra skirts, while other influences filtered down from the catwalk include the Wild-West (at Anna Sui), and Grecian and Edwardian styling at Dries Van Noten and Alexander McQueen respectively. Expect to see all of these style references developing to some extent for autumn/winter 05/06.
During the warm summer weather, however less extreme versions of layered skirts are impacting on the streets with lightweight sheer fabrics proving most effective for gently flounced skirts and short draped styles.
