Jo Carey Street Trends – Elegantly Waisted
30-09-2005
Key for transitional wardrobes, the waistcoat is now a must-have item on the street.
Key detailing includes front welt pockets, cut-away shaped armholes, curved revers, side straps, tuxedo styling and contrast-fabric back panels.
Brass buttons are in keeping with a nautical flavour that has impacted over the summer months, while denim variations have a more casual, urban edge. Fits are semi-structured with or without collars, with extremely low break-points or in contrast, buttoned-up silhouettes helping to create flattering fits.
To truly emphasis the waistcoat’s masculine appeal, wear as part of a two-piece suit with matching tailored jacket. Alternatively, wear with plain t-shirts or vests and team with jeans. Layering vests or tank tops can create similar proportional effects as a waistcoat. Balenciaga utilised colour blocking to good effect as part of their autumn/winter 05/06 collection. Extremely cropped waistcoats are hot combined with fluid dresses and continue the proportional trend set with knitted shrugs this summer.
Woven, textural fabrics are most directional, with subtle checks lending a distinguished air, and velvet or plush fabrics offering more sumptuous effects.
Watch for sparkle and shine updating the humble waistcoat in time for the party season.
