Jo Carey street trends – Sock it to ’em
05-10-2005
For an instant outfit update, add a pair of socks. A key style statement this season, socks add a youthful, sexy and sometimes quirky quality to a look. Socks are hot worn with dresses and skirts although shorts or trousers and sock combinations have the freshest appeal.
Varying lengths of socks create differing looks. Choose from knee-, mid-calf, over-the-knee and ankle lengths. Over-the-knee lengths look directional worn over tights, as do knee-length boots combined with extra-long socks. A hint of flesh between sock top and dress hem adds a subtle sex appeal while chunky woollen socks are cool on show beneath open-toes shoes. Legwarmers pulled up over the leg create a similar effect as socks and continue the theme of playing with proportion.
Fabrics vary from opaque and woollen knits, to sheer fabrics for vintage appeal, and Lurex yarns for a subtle luxe touch. Woven vertical lines lengthen the calf, while chunky horizontal stripe placements create a sporty feel. All over prints and patterns such as argyle checks or geometric shapes emphasis the leg further.
