Worn in place of outerwear or layered with other garments, knitwear proves an essential element in stylish winter wardrobes. Flashes of brights against dark grounds are key for knitted accessories such as hats and scarves, while must-have item, leggings are hot in woollen pointelle-style knits.
Crochet proves a hot option for scarves and hats this winter with floral motifs adding to the hand-crafted vibe. Come summer, lightweight crochet will be impacting on the highstreet in the form of cute 60’s-inspired summer dresses. This season however, waffle-style knits in light-weight handles or heavier weight yarns, work for pullovers as do soft angoras and mohair. Sweater dresses, will make the transition through to spring in lightweight silk blend yarns morphing into shirt-dresses.
Knitwear featured across the recent spring/summer 06 catwalk shows with designers such as Cacharel, Karen Walker and Chanel all incorporating knitted garments in some form into their collections. Karen Walker opted for cheeky graphics printed on pullovers and woven vertical stripes or checkerboard effects on double-breasted cardigans, perfect for youth markets. Cacharel showed cute woven motifs on pullovers and halter-tops, while Eley Kishimoto’s pretty lightweight summer dress featured bright braided trims contrasted against delicate white crochet.
