If the likes of Burberry, who, let’s face is not short of a few bob or two, has to close down its last remaining UK based factory, then manufacturing in this country appears very bleak indeed. Kind of ironic, don’t you think, when topics such as ethical practices, fair trade and the need for all to reduce their carbon footprint have been splashed all over the press of late.
Some may argue that workers in developing countries may well be paid a pittance but in areas of extreme poverty that pittance provides priceless survival opportunities. The basic rationale of economics. Feeling good about your £4 bargain?
While the debate about fair-pay, ethical practices and where our goods are produced rages on, the general consensus is that we do need to support the few UK fashion manufacturers that remain. Not only to keep business and employment opportunities within the country but to ensure that the technical skills that go with them stay alive. High street favourite TopShop admits to using manufacturers based all around the globe but they do, however, use a UK firm for their top-end range of coats.
Open to the inclusion of more local CMT companies Caren Downie (TopShop Buying Director) and Rachel Proud (TopShop Buyer for Skirts and TS Boutique) have confirmed that they will attend a meeting to view the talent and capacity of local companies.
Set up by Fashion-Enter and supported by the City Fringe Partnership (CFP) the initiative is working to promote the skills and fast turnaround times of London based manufacturers. Due to take place on the 15th January 07, the buyers will be presented with a cross-section of samples including soft dressing, woven and knitted fabrics as well as examples of tailoring from five Cut-Make-Trim businesses with the aim of securing contracts.
Jenny Holloway, Director of Fashion-Enter, and consultant for the CFP on the promotion of fashion manufacturing, said that: “It is refreshing to see that the High Street really does care about the decline of the fashion manufacturing base in the UK. With their finger on the pulse, TopShop are yet again leading the way forward in recognising local talent.â€
Jenny has already contacted a number of CMT units in the City Fringe. Businesses who are interested in pursuing similar opportunities should contact Jenny at Fashion-Enter on 020 8462 9620.
