Midnight Bongs at BoomBox:

02-01-2007

Tears were shed in fashion land when cult club night, Family, announced its end last summer, but rising immediately from its ashes like some fluro-technicolour phoenix came BoomBox; the Sunday night destination for the most stylish of clubbers. And where else would they be on New Years Eve, than busting out their flyest looks down at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen where the night is held weekly? [I’ll overlook the fact that equally fabulous fellow – or is that rival? – fashion party, AntiSocial was being held a mere 30 seconds round the corner at Bar Music Hall.]

{mosimage}Well, the guest list read like a roll-call of who’s so hot right now. Once through the doors, (governed like a true queen by door-wh*re Jeanette I might add) POP supremo Katie Grand partied with friend and fashion’s hero of the year, Giles Deacon, plus hot new boys at London Fashion Week, Richard Nicoll (give us a tickle!) and Jonathan Saunders. With the warmest all-inclusive community vibe, the fashion elite mingled with the hoi polloi, students, young designers, and those wot just like to dress-up.

Neu-rave poster boy (who seems to be E1’s most prolific party spinner right now), Matthew !WOWOW! and HRH of The Scene, Princess Julia threw down the tunes to keep the crowd dancing – and come midnight, out came the green lasers, turning the room, for a  moment, into some kinda bizarre freakishly hip Coldplay concert.

It’s impossible to articulate the looks of the night other than – there were no rules: the DIY ethic prevails!!! Neon-clad rave kidz dripping in unashamedly cheapo plastic trinkets mashed it up alongside whimsical vintage junkies, resplendent in chi-chi dresses with hair and lips done to perfection. Dandy boys all suited and booted in prim tweeds shook their stuff next to rude-boys hoodied and high-top’d to the max.

{mosimage}Forget the runways; here is where trend themes are laid down / devised / mutated / perverted. Gay or straight, male or female (or both) – the evening was a stupefying celebration of the wonderfully eccentric shameless fashion freaks. But only my supremely fierce creative director friend, Kabir could work the stunning Basso & Brooke creation with shiny purple leggings in the majestic way he did.

{mosimage}And your reporter? Well, I fronted my recent and oh-so-sickeningly jammy purchase of a vintage Chanel dress (£15 in a charidee shop folks – proving that outside London it is still possible to find second-hand gems not hideously overpriced) my baby Balenciaga clutch, leggings and – wait for it – gold leather platforms which are soooo YSL but were in fact a steal from George at ASDA for £3.50, but shhh, don’t tell anyone.

Happy New Year!!!
