Who You Calling Ugly?? By Laura Frampton
22-01-2007
Golden Globe winner America Ferrera plays the leading role of Betty Suarez, an unattractive girl from Queens. Who, despite her clear lack of knowledge on what not to wear, is keen to conquer the world of fashion. And with the help of her father Ignacio, sister Hilda and fashion conscious nephew Justin she will no doubt do just that.
Through her appearance or more truthfully told her ugliness, Betty manages to land the role of assistant to the editor of New York’s Mode magazine. Top dog Bradford Meade offers her the job based on the fact that “team” player and son, Daniel Meade, will remain focused on his job instead of his female assistants. A perfectly cringe worthy moment when Betty finds out her real purpose to the company, nevertheless this determined young girl will do everything it takes and more to prove her worth in such an image driven environment. Including the public humiliation of skin tight PVC hot pants for a fashion shoot!
With the support of new best friend, wardrobe assistant Christina, Betty’s career saving idea manages to highlight her talent. However, like any great story of triumph over tribulation, there are many people standing in the way of Betty’s success… Wilhelmina Slater and her gay sidekick Marc have the sole objective to take over the magazine. Stopping anyone and everyone who stands in their way, whilst maintaining a botoxed crease-free forehead of course!! And then there’s Amanda, the receptionist who as her full time occupation will make Betty’s life a misery. From stealing her good luck charm “bunny” to constant bullying and belittlement, this tough fashionista won’t give up without a fight.
It’s a delightful show, with cameo appearances from executive producer Salma Hayek sparking a Hollywood appeal. With its similar concept to ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and mysterious murder plotline alike to Desperate Housewives, this humorous production provides a variety for all to enjoy. Challenging realistic views on common presumptions of the industry, with the ironic twist that the stereotypical views from within fashion is UGLY and not Betty’s mouth full of braces!!
