LFW: Gavin Douglas

Gavin Douglas
His show, entitled ‘Queens of The Ocean’ presented a 1940’s silhouette and the story of well travelled American women during the time of World War II. Showing his support from the front row was Colin McDowell, the brains behind Fashion Fringe which Douglas won in September 2006.
The first looks saw silk pieces in jewel tones, beige, metallics and a deep red. Rouching and pleats added depth to the designs and could be seen on pencil skirts, shirts and waisted jackets. Blouses were ornamented with sequined bibs, sharp collars, definite shoulders and bows tied at the neck to give a Nashville country-singer impression. The show continued to unleash silk wrap-around dresses in bronze and gold, an aubergine mohair jacket with a belted waist and wide lapels and pencil skirts in a flattering yellow and black. Black shiny skinny trousers teamed with a soft brown leather jacket and belted waist turned a 1940’s silhouette into an ultra-modern and ultra-chic look.
Ostrich features added texture with short cropped boleros, and a waist length cream shrug. Trousers were androgynous and straight legged worn above the hips. In contrast to the pencil skirts shown in the collection one skirt took on the form of a tutu, black, down to the knees and with billowing netting underneath. All the macs adopted a similar theme with belted waists, wide lapels and full skirts and came in every shade of metallic.
Douglas’ ladies effortlessly sashayed down the runway in towering platform heels by Terry de Havilland occasionally accessorized with vintage suitcases and hats by Karen Henriksen.
Make-up and hair were bold and appropriate with dark lips, strong eyes and gravity defying quiffs.
