02-06-2007

Criteria for the SDC Colour & Textiles Award > >

·         ExpIoring the creative and inspired use of colour to achieve a distinctive fashion statement in either printed or constructed textiles

The SDC Colour & Textiles Award is portfolio-based and every college and university represented at Graduate Fashion Week will be eligible to enter up to three students for the opportunity of winning. Judged by Tamara Salman (design director at Liberty) and Chris Sargeant (SDC vice-president for fashion/design), the winner will be announced at the glittering Gala Show and Awards on Wednesday 6 June at 8pm.

What is the SDC?
The Society of Dyers and Colourists encourages the creative and inspired use of colour in fashion and textile design and is a committed sponsor of young designers. In addition to awarding bursaries and grants, the SDC has sponsored various Colour Awards and run for a number of years the successful Colour in Design competition. The designs of the 2006 winner – Victoria Stone (London College of Fashion) – included a number of opulent outfits that exuded a fervour for print and colour and her designs will be on show on the SDC exhibition stand during the course of GFW.

What is different about this award?
The new SDC Colour & Textiles Award at GFW is all about the creative and inspired use of colour. During the course of the judging process, the students will have the opportunity to talk to the judges about their inspirations and explain how colour impacts on their designs. From the three shortlisted students, a winner will be chosen who will not only enjoy the prestige of winning a prize during GFW, but will also be awarded a cheque for £750, with an additional £250 being awarded to the winning college. The winner will also be presented with the Veronica Bell Award, in memory of the Society’s first woman president who died in 2003.
