Comment: Back to School

22-08-2007

How I used to hate those ‘Back To School’ signs as a kid. This summer, however, I am sure they hit the store windows before kids had actually broken up for their summer break – which does strike me as slightly cruel. Needless to say retailers have been feeling the pinch and let’s face it schoolwear is guaranteed to sell, right.

The latest retailers to capitalize on the schoolwear market are the supermarkets and value retail chains. Back in the day kids coming into school with cheap as chips clothing were often mocked by the others. But since the rise of supermarket chic the tables have most definitely turned. With the likes of Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco offering schoolwear basics, for example boys school trousers from £3, what budget conscious parent is going to argue?

The question is where does that leave the independents that have been serving the schoolwear market for years? Can quality prevail against such competitive prices?

What do you think?
