Jo Butler’s Student Style

04-10-2007

Whether we’ve had a summer working in London, travelling around India or spending a humble holiday at home, it’s clear that we’ve all picked up style tips along the way which we’ve been dying to showcase down at the union.

One of my friends has raided her mum’s wardrobe, becoming a vintage queen. Another has returned from her travels adorned with ethnic scarves and bohemian jewellery. Many (including myself) have been desperately thinking up ways to update the clothes we bought back in May, when we still had the dregs of our loan left.

A trend that has certainly made the transition from the catwalks to our university campus is 70s Cool. Think Kate Hudson in Almost Famous and the hippy style of Mischa Barton. Girls all over Uni have been rocking flowery tunics, high waisted flairs and, as the cold weather draws in, knitted mini dresses with thick tights.

Another item that has been springing up on boys and girls alike is the trusty old leather jacket. It cropped up in slick black, beaten brown and mellow grey. With the high street doing cheap versions, this item has developed into a firm essential.

Over the past few months I’ve been reading about a new trend encompassing biker elements and dominatrix influences. I’ve been dubious, but it appears that it is not only wearable and is catching on fast! It seems the best way to make sure you don’t look like you’ve crawled out of a gimp closet, is to incorporate individual pieces of Harware into your wardrobe, a studded bag, PVC belt or towering patent heels.

The Afghan Scarf has been another staple item this week. It’s been spotted in a range of colours from traditional ethnic hues to neons. From the Middle East to middle class kids, this item gives any outfit a funky and eclectic over tone.

As our loans come flooding in and shops offer special student deals, I’m going to be chatting to a range of students, presenting their key buys in my next blog. I’m expecting a merge of high fashion and high street to create that unique student style.
