Fairtrade Fortnight:
25-02-2008
February 25th marks the launch of Fairtrade fortnight, a nationwide opportunity
to become personally enlightened, to raise awareness and promote a little Fairtrade
conscience in the everyday shoppers around you and to spread that all important
feel-good factor as you go. I know what you're thinking, who'll keep all
those poor high street chain market stores in business if we go helping out
others across the seas? Well, don't fret, something tells me they'll
survive.
It's not just your everyday grocery buying habits that can make a positive
impact either, no sir-ee. The ever changing fashion world and its
expansive ethics are also thankfully shifting to redemptory realms of reform
too. For a shining example of just how simple it is to play fair and dress
fair, check out www.tammam.co.uk (whose
Spring/Summer collection launches March 1st) and maybe even change the way you
shop. Tammam you say – WHO?
Lucy Tammam is a Central St Martins college graduate who's impressively and
classically trained in tailoring (Claudio Cavalcanti, Rome don't you know!) and
is an ethical wedding dress designer ( see www.greenunion.co.uk ) and above all
else is founder of the Tammam label which launched last year.
The Tammam label champions natural, stylish, ethical and sustainable fair trade
fashion that's made using local crops from Nepal and India. Organically farmed
materials such as hemp, banana, nettle, organic cotton and peace silk are each utilized
in the promotion of fair trade. Working with different producers, they
acknowledge and address the importance of giving opportunities to farmers and
workers who work to fair conditions but cannot yet afford to be
certified. So, instead of saying thank-you very much to their suppliers,
before going on to rake in the cash, Tammam maintain a relationship that's
undeniably beneficial to their suppliers which, ultimately, sees them develop
in unison.
Amy Mason is Tammam’s press agent, who kindly contributed to this piece by
adding the following:
"This fair-trade fortnight the
house of Tammam are saving the world in style! We work to the highest
standards of ethical style to offer highly fashionable clothing that won't harm
the planet, its people or its animals. Lucy Tammam is our designing, driving
force who won't compromise on design or quality either."
However, with a quick search on the old www you're sure to find numerous other
sites doing their bit for the cause, so, the only question now is – when will
you start? Did I mention its Fairtrade fortnight yet? It's a
nationwide opportunity.
Please visit either of the 2 sites listed below (and the sites of their listed
partners and friends) to see just how simple it could be to make a massive and
immediate difference.
