Aboriginal Art
Aboriginal Art has become somewhat of a western fascination. There have been recent documentaries on TV stating that American Art house buyers are exploiting these poor indigenous people who create such magical artwork which has lead to discontent between the aboriginal people and the white man.
Unethical aboriginal art dealers are commonly called carpetbaggers in Australia as many simply take the work, walk away and return to their art galleries with the work, they then have to wait for the pieces to be sold which can takes months.
The work that these artists produce are symbolic and represent journeys and deeds of creator ancestors. Each piece tells a story…
Whenever a traditional Aboriginal person looks at the landscape, he or she always sees much more than just the physical features. There is a deep awareness of the presence of the Dreaming ancestors. All around are signs of their presence, their tracks, places where they had dug out valleys, split rocks or disturbed the ground in their passing. Sometimes too, their bodies or those of their enemies are perceived in rocks, boulders and trees.
Their actual spirits are also there, not dangerous or unfriendly, living on in the world they made. It is possible to communicate with ancestor spirits. The bond that this creates is one of enormous strength. Overall, the earth is a 'mother' in a real sense.
So as you can see these peices of art are steeped very deep in history and theological theory.
Each artwork is labor intensive, each dot has been dotted using a long stick to which amazing artwork is created, nothing is pre-drawn it all effortlessly flows straight from the artists hands. It truly is amazing and when you see these humble people drawing in this manner you can be sure it is a gift from God.
Here are some of my favorite pieces…

This painting explained…
Like European art, Aboriginal art represents and symbolises the world and the beliefs of people. Traditional Aboriginal art represent the Dreaming but is often also a vital part of ceremonies.
