The Innovators Fashion Design Studio show – Australian Fashion Week

A highly commendable mention should go to Soeli Pedrozo who technically did blow me away. The intricate pattern making and manipulation of fabric was outstanding. The three dimensional effect that the textures had against the body were a breath of fresh air after watching some of the other designer's more ‘marketable' garments. It truly took fashion design back to its age-old craft of attention to detail. Pleats, shearing and rouging wove its way around the body in an architectural capacity, giving depth and innovation to the collection.
Racheal Sherwood street style collection definitely deserves and mention and the crowd applause that she received. She experimented with a blend of futuristic street style and more classic tailoring, bringing geometric lines into a more urban context. The show-stopper, her metal breast and hip plate woven onto a sleek black maxi.
Pun by Seema Pun was too, an intrigue display of technical finery. The volume and dimension in her designs were truly commendably. The ability to create such form with fabric is a challenged and Pun seemed very much up for it. The downside however was that the collection lacked a cohesiveness between the colours, fabrications and the innovative techniques.
The final designer Christian Lines' collection showcased the future of street urban style for men and woman. It was an intense collection, with edgy detailing and high tech geometric prints. For want of a better allusion it had a rather Zoolander-eskue feel, fun and quirky with a very serious street undertone.
It is a challenge to strike a balance between all the elements of design. I think these designers are definitely ones to watch. Often the balance comes with sheer experience and maturity. I am hoping that their technical knowledge is translated into intellectual collections in the near future.
