Marnie Skillings – ‘All tomorrow’ Angels’
05-05-2009
The juxtapositions of the rebel and angel interplay with the feminine and masculine aspects of tailoring and introducing a little disillusioned flower child that is discovering her feminine powers.

Full of energy, the show kicked of with Skarlett Saramore from the punk rock band ‘Chaingang' leaving nothing to the imagination in her barely there outfit as she drummed to the sound of Fever Ray, Siouxsie Sou and the Banshees. The beat definitely got the pulse pounding as Skillings made entrance for the Bosozoko girl inspired white flak boiler and maxi jumpsuits; a contemporary interpretation of a workman's uniform.

Purity, cleanliness and innocence are evoked from the white tones but the strong modern shapes and practical silhouettes confuse the ethereal essence with its unlikely combination. This is also apparent in the ‘Zeus floral textiles' where she uses pastel beiges and specs of scarlet reds reminiscent of the hippie flower child and pairs it with distressed silk jersey and studded belts to balance and toughen up the look.

Black adds a touch of strength to subdued beige, appearing in sequins, utilitarian zips, studded belts and chains. The darkness of the trims brings out the tough-as-nails villainesses, that by day hide under the super feminine bat wing throws and chiffon kaftan dresses in delicate colours of cream, peach and dusky pink.
A well-researched concept that stands out in style and brings about the noise and thrill seeking adventure of the motorcycle gangs mixed with the kind of deliciously over-the-top ethereal goddesses.
