GFW 09 – Edinburgh College of Art

08-06-2009

Firstly Carly Wilson's collection, which was inspired by 'British youth subcultures, punks, mods and embellished punk attire'. This created a strong collection that mixed sheer panels, ruched trousers and feathered epulates that came in yellow, wine, grey and monochrome hues. It was chic and sassy and a good use of structure and colour.

This punk style was also seen in Natalie Morris's collection, all in black, Natalie chose to go all out 80's with plenty of mohair, more epulates (this time bejewelled) and high waists and dog-tooth all made an appearance. Sleeves went all 'Dynasty', with legs of mutton and the trend for on show zips continued. In fact, general rock trends were well represented in these two shows.

But the real star of the show was definitely Joseph McGee, whose collection of draped and perfectly manipulated dresses, were simple, yet complex and incredibly divine. The tailored manipulation, shown in a range of grey tones was nothing if not an exceptional show of workmanship. McGee is definitely my one to watch.
