Toning Down Tailoring
20-09-2013
If you don’t want to end up looking like a middle-aged woman in a business suit, we’ve got some simple tips for toning down tailoring to achieve the perfect balance between smart and stylish.
Try Out TexturesPairing a smart, tailored pair of cigarette pants with a slouchy, comfortable cotton t-shirt is a great way to instantly tone down your tailoring. Tuck your t-shirt in at the waistband and throw on a pair of classy heels for a look that’s the perfect balance between smart and casual. If you want to look stylish at work, then this is definitely the look to channel. For after work drinks, slick on a classic red lipstick and add a statement necklace for a simple transition from day to night.
Be a Little Risqué
If you love the idea of a sharp, chic two piece but aren’t sure how to prevent it looking like you’re ready for a day at the office, take some inspiration from Cara Delevingne at the opening of Burberry’s Shanghai store. She sported a clean cut, cream suit but wore nothing underneath the jacket. It’s a little risqué, but showing off your décolletage is a sophisticated way to wear sharp tailoring for an evening occasion. Simply add some delicate gold necklaces like Queen Delevingne and you’ve nailed the look.
Do it Like a Dude
Boyfriend style, oversized tailoring has been around for a couple of years now, but the trend isn’t set to disappear any time soon. An oversized blazer/coat hybrid thrown over a structured, well-fitted dress is an interesting take on toning down tailoring. You could even borrow your boyfriend’s New & Lingwood shirt that you’ve been eyeing up since he bought it and pair it with some tight-fitting skinny jeans and patent brogues. Androgyny is still a big trend, so there’s no harm in raiding your other-half’s wardrobe after he leaves for work on a morning.
Play Around With Prints
Printed, tailored two pieces are everywhere at the moment. Whether you choose shorts, a skirt or trousers is up to you, but most sets include some form of matching jacket. Wear them together for a smart yet stylish co-ordinated look, or wear them separately and include the separates in any of the looks we’ve already suggested. When it comes co-ordinates, going for something with a neutral base colour like black, navy or cream works well, but you could go all-out on a bold and colourful pattern if you’re feeling daring.
