Freckles: A Trend or just a Trait?
26-08-2008

Can physical attributes really be considered a trend when oftentimes one cannot control genetics?
Take freckles for instance. Vogue magazine, the Bible for all things "in" and "out," has firmly declared that freckles are trendy – at least for the shelf life of its September issue. Having freckles is uncontrollable. It's nature. It's genetics. It's a trend? Avoiding the sun or wearing SPF keeps the uneven clusters of melanin slightly faded, but for those of us completely spotted, no normal makeup could possibly cover them.

Who Has Them
A-listers with freckles include Sienna Miller, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Anniston, Lindsay Lohan and Lily Cole to name a few.
Non-clothing related trends such as having a tan or remaining pale are understandable, but freckles, eye colour and a certain natural body build just do not make sense to classify as "trends." Will people try to create fake freckles now that Vogue declares them a trend? Doubtful. Not surprisingly, there are some How-to guides online about how to create freckles with a brown eyebrow pencil. The biggest question is, what will those with freckles do when Vogue declares freckles as "out?" Hopefully, the freckly people of the world will be confident enough to carry on, but there are millions of products, treatments and superstitions about getting rid of freckles.

Make Your Spots Shine
Now is not the time to be trying to cover up freckles if you have them. Here are some tips to help enhance your naturally freckly beauty.
- Wear Sheer Foundation (or wear none at all if you can get away with it)
- Use Mineral Makeup. This lightweight powder or blush actually reflects light.
- Moisturize. As your face soaks up moisture, it brightens your complexion.
And the best, but not the healthiest way to enhance natural freckles, is exposure to the sun. This of course is not recommended by dermatologists, but it is the best way to make freckles pop out.
In vogue or out of vogue, having freckles is genetic. If you love them, now other people might be influenced to love them too.
