The British Fashion Council (BFC) reported that “over half of the designers showing at London Fashion Week make some of their collections in the UK”, however they also reported that the British manufacturing industry is aging with “nearly two-thirds of employee’s over the age of 40”. While British designers such as Victoria Beckham; who claims she produces everything on home turf; Mulberry, although internationally owned they construct 30% of their bags in the UK; and Burberry, who still make their iconic trench coat in North Yorkshire, are flying the flag. However, the demand for more accessibly priced pieces is increasing, putting welcome pressure on the High Street.

Sir Phillip Green vowed in 2012 to manufacture more on home ground, this promise is now mainly reflected in Arcadia’s Topshop Boutique range, with pieces marked ‘Made in Britain’. Other retailers continue to manufacture in Britain, such as Barbour and Hunter, a trademark that only aids the heritage feel to their lines. Other High Street brands such as Dents produce on home soil, while Dr Martens manufacture a “Made in England” (M.I.E) line. Boutiques are also producing here, with popular names being The Orphan’s Arms, specialising in slogan T-Shirts and sweatshirts, as well as The Cambridge Satchel Company, which was founded in 2008 by a mother and daughter, who have now opened up their own factory in Leicester due to the popularity of the bags.

Because you might be a little unsure where to look, we’ve picked out the best of the crop, to help you fill your wardrobe to the brim with patriotic pieces. As the summer warmth slowly ebbs away, the new look for the coming season will be a home grown one. With UK designers and the High Street leading the way, it’s only a matter of time before the most sought after label is ‘Made in Britain’.
