LFW S/S 14: Mark Fast

15-09-2013

With rock music blasting from the speakers as I entered the show space it was definitely a nod to a darker realm. The collection was a celebration “of the spirit of youth” and wild night’s out. This was clearly translated through thigh-skimming, cobweb revealing mini dresses. Just about covering the models modesty, they were styled with jet black back-combed messes and wedge creepers.

Taking grunge to a new sleeker level Fast has really embraced the 90’s era and brought it bang up-to-date. Beginning with a woven mixture of black and grey, I could imagine “skies reflected on static television screens” through the dull-greyed blues and sombre grey yarns. Lemon yellow began to trickle in on the bodies of sculpted knits with heavily fringed skirts which fell into maxi dresses.

The movement was fierce yet fluid as the models graced the catwalk. Crocheted with intricacy the level of craft that went into each garment was phenomenon, flashes of flesh were seen in the most unexpected areas of the gowns. Delicate yet edgy, there was a sense vulnerability from the knitwear shown, accompanied with leather patent gloves these essentially feminine dresses were toughened-up with the well styled accessories.

Trance music was blaring from the speakers and it reminded me of my youth spent in Camden’s Cyber Dog, which stemmed back to Fast’s initial inspiration “the spirit of youth”.
