This growth is being driven by rapid uprising of the middle class in China. A large sector of this middle class are young Chinese women adopting western lifestyles by working and taking on senior job roles giving them high disposable income at a young age before they have children making them more likely to spend.

Conlumino global research director Maureen Hinton has stated that retailers should take advantage of increased online connectivity to reach Chinese shoppers by saying ‘The growth of the internet and social media have generated global fashion trends and this has made it far easier for international fashion brands to expand. ‘Where once fashion tended to be local, this is no longer the case,’ she said.
Such evolvement in growth is not all what it seems however to western retailers although there is optimism. The Chinese market has not been an easy market to crack. Luxury brands including Burberry and retailer such as Tesco and DIY have found it tough competing against local operators who have put up a strong contest in provided value for their consumers.
