Searches for ‘England Shirts’ Up 2,470% Ahead of Euros Final: Experts Analyse ‘Blokecore’ Trends
10-12-2024
Following England’s win against The Netherlands during the semi-final match of the Euros on Wednesday evening, searches for ‘England shirts’ have increased by 2,470%, according to Google search data.
So whether you are looking for outfit inspiration for Sunday’s game between England and Spain, or want to know more about the ‘Blokecore’ football fashion phenomenon, Nick Drewe, trend expert and Founder of online platform Wethrift, has teamed up with Vintage Dealer and Fashion Communication Lecturer Louisa Rodgers, to provide exclusive insight.
“Blokecore is a really interesting trend. It has been heavily influenced by the Instagram popularity of Scandinavian fashion bloggers who have been playing with combining mannish proportions, sportswear and sleek feminine touches like gold jewellery and ballet pumps for some time now.
“And it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, with over 30 million videos under the term ‘Blokecore’ on TikTok, with users showcasing their interpretation and style of the fashion trend.
“This massively appeals to an English audience because it has found a way to combine patriotic sportswear with fashion-conscious elements; beforehand wearing a football shirt might have felt a bit too practical (or like you’d be quizzed on your sport-specific knowledge!) or low-key, so Blokecore has found a way to elevate this in a very attainable way.
“Blokecore takes the comfort of athleisure but without the slightly cringey fitness-influencer connotations and adds a Damson-Madder playfulness to its looks. It’s giving women a way to show their support for their country without making them feel as though they have to “prove” their sporting credentials.
“When it comes to styling the look, whether you are into the Euro’s or not, you can approach the Blokecore aesthetic in a number of ways.
“First of all, be creative with your searches. Find out information on teams with historically interesting colourways, motifs or sponsor logos included in their designs and look for them. You might find a niche team with a great retro kit for a bargain price!
“Another way to style the Blokecore look, is by elevating the outfit with accessories: small gold earrings, a silk scarf neckerchief, and feminine footwear are good ways to take the ultrasporty edge off whilst maintaining a Blokecore vibe.
“A key part of styling a football shirt is remembering that proportions matter. You probably want to wear the football shirt loose so thinking about more fitted bottoms helps to balance out the look; stretchy and slightly bootcut capri pants are making a comeback this summer, with Pinterest Trend searches for them up by 244.8%. The silhouette of capri pants elongates the leg when paired with backless heeled mules.
“You could also look at a mini skirt with an interesting hem detail to peek out from the bottom of the shirt to add texture and interest to the outfit.
“However, if you want to go all out blokecore with wide-leg cargo pants, you can still maintain daintiness in your accessories. A small handbag, strappy shoes and layered jewellery can offset the looseness of the rest of your look without feeling too fussy. After all, blokecore is all about taking a more laidback attitude to fashion!”
