Global Recycling Day 18th March: Turning Waste into Opportunity
17-03-2026
Every year on Global Recycling Day (18th March), the world is reminded of one simple but powerful truth: recycling is one of the most effective ways we can combat climate change and protect our planet’s finite resources. As a cornerstone of the circular economy, recycling reduces the need for raw material extraction, cuts emissions and keeps valuable materials in use for longer.
This global moment isn’t just about sorting waste, it’s about rethinking how we design, use and reuse everything around us. It’s a day to put the planet first and celebrate the people and initiatives making that possible – our #RecyclingHeroes.
From Waste to Worth: Fashion’s Circular Future
The fashion and textiles industry is one of the largest contributors to global waste. Each year, an estimated 92 to 120 million metric tons of textile waste is discarded. Even more striking: we already have enough clothing in circulation to dress the world for the next 20 years, yet only 12% of materials are recycled and just 1% is transformed back into new garments.
This is where innovation and collaboration become essential. At Fashion-Enter Ltd, sustainability is more than a concept it’s embedded into everyday practice. Their latest collaboration with ReFAB Studio, supported by The Clothworkers’ Company, is a shining example of how circular design can be both practical and empowering.
The ReFAB Studio x Fashion-Enter Ltd / FashionCapital partnership has launched a series of hands-on upcycling workshops aimed at transforming textile waste into meaningful, functional products while equipping participants with valuable skills.

Using premium, unused remnants sourced from designer textile merchants and interior brands, attendees learn to create items such as:
- Tote bags
- Cushion covers
- Table runners
But the impact goes far beyond the finished products. These workshops are designed to foster education, confidence, wellbeing and community connection. Two workshops have taken place so far at the FC Designer Workspace in Islington and the feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my day and came away with a finished product ready to use straight away.”
“Thanks to the teacher’s guidance, many old skills have come back to me… It was also my first time using an industrial sewing machine, but I managed to get the hang of it.”
“Lovely team who is helpful and encouraging. Really enjoyed the workshop, looking forward to many more!”
“It was super fun, learned a lot and great teachers and building communities.”

The next ReFAB Studio x Fashion-Enter Ltd workshop will take place on Thursday, 26th March 2026 (10am–4pm), focusing on creating Envelope Cushion Covers. It’s another opportunity to turn discarded materials into something beautiful and useful while being part of a growing movement for change.

Global Recycling Day is more than a date in the calendar, it’s a call to rethink waste as a resource. Initiatives like this demonstrate how collaboration, creativity and community engagement can reshape industries and inspire lasting change.
By supporting circular practices and celebrating recycling innovation, we can all play a part in making the most of the materials that already exist on the planet.
