FC Designer Collective: Another Earthling
Each week FashionCapital will shine a spotlight on one of their creative talents stocked at the FC Designer Collective on Fonthill Road, London N4. This week it’s the turn of Another Earthling, a mask and headwear brand created by local artist Mary Obaseki.
Here Mary explains her handcrafted felting skills
and the inspiration behind her unique masks and headwear:
“I specialise in needle felted animal and bird masks which I handcraft from locally sourced, rare breed British and Scandinavian wools. Dry felting or needle felting is the technique of creating felted fabric or objects from diverse fibres including wool, bamboo, silk, flax, hemp and recycled ocean plastics. Reverse barbed needles are used to knit the fabrics together by hand, giving the freedom to blend colours seamlessly and create interesting textures and forms.
“Detailed work goes into each character mask, with beaks and antlers, horns and tusks all hand-sculpted, painted and lacquered. They are finished with soft satin ribbons and a sturdy elastic strap and can be worn masquerade style on the face, or high on the forehead as a headdress. With over 50 creatures featured in my Etsy shop, I always welcome new commissions.
“I created the masks and brand after moving to London and a career change from horticulture to art and design. I grew up in a biodynamic Steiner community on the Ashdown Forest, we spent a huge amount of time outside around animals and trees, streams and soil and have a family culture of creating and making. The natural world has always been a massive source of inspiration and joy for me, I love the organic nature of wool and working with fibres, it’s such a raw material that the finished product has an incredibly lifelike quality.
“I also design and create costume headdresses and props, available online and at music festivals throughout the summer months. From unique and magical butterfly swarms to bountiful flower crowns via sparkling crystal and delicate mermaid tiaras and one off fascinators.”
On being stocked at the FC Designer Collective Mary said: “I live on the Andover Estate and love shopping on Fonthill Rd, walking past and seeing my work there is such a great feeling. As a one woman small business, you take on every aspect and have to learn as you go, that can be overwhelming and quite isolating so it’s a massive blessing to be included in this project. From from my products being in a local bricks and mortar shop and the mentoring, to just being part of something creative with other like minded local women is amazing.”
