Newsletter 9th July 2014

Dear all,

adidas_junn

On the international catwalk circuit this week the men have moved over for the heady delights of women’s haute couture. Our resident trend reporter Katie Farley will be adding her informative reports from the Parisian catwalks later this week. Meanwhile sport may have taken centre stage but there’s plenty of fashion to go with it, whether it’s Juun.J collaborating with Adidas (image right) or style spotting the chic audience at Wimbledon – you can be sure there is always something new to talk about in the fast-paced world of fashion.

Fashion Enter at the Big Bang

The Big Bang Fair London event took place on Tuesday 8th July at Alexandra Palace. The event showcased some student’s talent as well as providing the opportunity to meet employers and career advisors for information and a direct insight into potential ‘hands on’ careers.

A hall of interactive workshops and stalls attracted over 40,000 young people aged between 11-18. Fashion Enter were invited to hold an interactive workshop, to teach young people all about garment manufacturing and production. Hoping to spread the word on an alternative to university and direct route into fashion, via apprenticeships the Fashion Capital team were also on hand to give a direct insight and guidance into the programmes and latest training opportunities.

The Fashion Enter stand also hosted the ‘Want to be a designer?’ competition. Students that visited the stall, after learning about the full design process in making a garment, taking into consideration factors including fabric and who their target market would be, were given the opportunity to try their hand at designing a garment with the chance of winning a goodie bag. The team was overwhelmed at the entries and sheer amount of knowledge and skill applied to each design.

Production experts were on hand from Fashion Enter to explain the garment life cycle and give students a deeper understanding into the behind the scenes of garment manufacturing and the amount of creativity and workmanship that goes into each design. Many students were shocked to hear that clothing production took place in the UK, excited at the prospect of their high street labels being made so close to home.

“I’m so surprised, the Factory is right near my home.”

9_july_emily_tuttMeet Our Latest Intern – Ellie Tutt

Having recently graduated from the University of Southampton with a 2:1 in History, Ellie (pictured right) is now keen to set her sights on a career in fashion, in particular fashion marketing.

Ellie’s experience stems back to her retail work in a popular clothing store during the London 2012 Olympic Games – which attracted over 5.5 million visitors during the games. During this time Ellie gained an insight into events management and business marketing.

Hoping to further her knowledge and apply it to a Fashion Head Office, Ellie approached Fashion Capital for an internship.

“I hope to further my knowledge of how fashion operates as a business and in particular how marketing initiatives best function in, and drive the world of fashion.”

A Visit to ASOS.com HQ

9_july_asos_visitOn Tuesday 8th July, The Stitching Academy took the current learners to ASOS HQ.

The educational visit was set to give students an insight to ASOS.com and its involvement with new and developing projects. Students were given a dedicated day with ASOS.com staff to ask questions and get a detailed insight into the successful company.

The global e-tailer, based in a newly refurbished 100,000sqft office space in Camden is home to some of ASOS’ most well known services including the ASOS.com design room and ASOS.com catwalk.

Students arrived at 10:00 o’clock for a prompt 10:15 start, upon arrival were shown through to a fashion themed meeting room before being given a full introduction to the company with a video into how the company was founded, its projects and future goals.

Students were then invited to sit-in on a fitting session, advised to take notes on any problems that occurred and how the staff overcame this. Fitting a garment is a large part of the Stitching Academy criteria, and having the opportunity to see how one of the largest global e-tailers fit their garments was a great insight for the students, in aiding their course and current knowledge.

Later in the afternoon the learners were then given a detailed presentation on ASOS Marketplace, a fairly new initiative and how it is helping expand and grow ASOS.com into new fields of retail. Before another presentation into ASOS’ garment technology systems on how garments are checked to a standard to ensure they are suitable and wearable for the ASOS.com customer.

The day ended with a grand tour of the premises and a detailed Q&A with staff, for students to ask any remaining questions.

Thanks for inviting me to ASOS head office, this visit has been a turning point in my future plans, today we were introduced to ASOS marketplace, which is a new platform for upcoming designers, it’s a great project that encourages new micro-businesses.  Personally I found that very inspiring and made me want to set up own collection. I had a very good vibe all around the building, the working conditions are second to none as well as a very productive and creative environment.

We were incredibly looked after by ASOS staff members, overall a great insight on how a fashion industry should work. Thank you so much Stitching Academy!!  – Evelyn Nava
