Newsletter 5th March 2014

Dear all,

It’s National Apprenticeship Week and providing quality and career strengthening apprenticeships in the fashion and manufacturing sector is a big part of what we are all about. From Marks & Spencer, New Look, River Island and Top Shop to designer brands Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab, Roksanda Ilincic and many more we are proud to bring employers and apprentices together providing mutual benefit for both parties and the industry as a whole.

We also have our own in-house apprentices holding positions on the factory floor and at head office. Zoe Barrow, last year’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’ winner is about to complete her apprenticeship, a multi-tasking role at FashionCapital’s head office, and has just been offered a full-time job with us. Congratulations Zoe and very well deserved.

Zoe on winning Apprentice of the Year 2013

5_march_zoe_app_year_13“Without the apprenticeship programme I feel I wouldn’t have been able to achieve, or even dream of achieving half of that I have within the past 2 years. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained have really set my career in motion and have made me confident in what career path I want to follow. I can now see these amazing creations in store and on the catwalk truly understand the craftsmanship and manufacturing processes that have gone from making the sketch a design, something that without the apprenticeship I wouldn’t have truly appreciated.

I have now been offered a full time job at Fashion Enter, which I have happily accepted, and look forward to proving that the apprenticeship programme can kick start a long fashion career.

With the programme expanding every day the competition is getting tougher so I want to wish good luck to all the candidates this year. Stick at what you’re doing and your work will be appreciated within the company!”

On the matter of this year’s ‘Fashion Enter Apprentice of the Year’ 2014 – it has been such a close call with many of our apprentices showing a keen interest and enthusiastic approach to their roles. We are pleased to announce that the Fashion Enter Apprentice of the Year 2014 is going to two apprentices! Well done:

Apprentices Get Involved!

sonia_pattern_cuttingIf you are an apprentice or an employer with an apprentice you can get involved!

Upload photos of your apprentices hard at work to Twitter using the hashtag #madebyapprentices for the chance to have them repined to the Number 10 Pinterest account. The 15 best images received during the week will be tweeted each day during National Apprenticeship Week by the Number 10 twitter account.

Another campaign is #Apprenticeships247 which is blog-like entries from apprentices, revealing what a day in the life of an apprentice is really like. You can keep up to date and check out the latest blogs via the Skillset Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/skillset) and Twitter pages. (https://twitter.com/SkillsetSSC)

Lastly make sure you share your interest in the annual 7-day campaign by tweeting using the hashtag #NAW2014 to Skillset (@SkillsetSSC) and NAS (@Apprenticeships) and share how apprentices have helped improve and grow your company.

Our Apprentices Visit Central St Martins

As a number of our Level 3 apprentices come to the end of their course they were treated to an educational trip to Central St Martins University on Friday 28th February 2014.

Renowned as the University that kick started the careers for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Mary Katrantzou and John Galliano. Students were treated to an archive of designs from some of the biggest designers to come through the doors.

Having an up close look into sketch books, old magazines and the designers graduate and most iconic pieces, our students were the first attendees allowed to touch the pieces without the use of gloves.

The information learnt will help the Level 3’s with finishing off and adding evidence to their portfolios.

If you’d be interested in booking a tour, check out the Central Saint Martins website for details: http://www.arts.ac.uk/csm/
