Stitching Academy Recruitment Day – Friday 7th February

stitching_academy_job_centre_feb_7Want to find out what the Stitching Academy can offer you?

Then come along to our recruitment day this Friday 7th February between 1pm and 5pm at Finsbury Park Jobcentre.

The ASOS/FashionCapital Stitching Academy opened in September 2013 and has enabled a number of individuals to go on and find apprenticeships, further education and jobs within the fashion sector. Recently Khadra Osman landed a much sought after apprenticeship with high street retailer M&S at their head office after completing the intensive and informative course, she said:

“I first heard about The Stitching Academy through the advertisement on the FashionCapital website. I’m really grateful that I was able to get involved with the programme during the summer. I was able to gain experience in a factory environment which I had not previously been able to do. My time spent at The Stitching Academy has opened so many new doors for me which I’m very thankful for. I’ve now been given the opportunity to start an apprenticeship with Marks & Spencer which will allow me to gain vital in-house experience which I probably would not have been able to get at university. I would like to thank the tutors and everyone at Fashion Capital because without their support I would not be where I am now.”

The 6-week Level 1 Stitching Academy course provides the perfect stepping stone to enter into the manufacturing or design side of the industry. As reported widely in the press of late the British manufacturing industry is crying out for skilled workers to develop brands that are truly designed and made in Britain.

Depending on your location you may be eligible for daily expenses throughout the 6-week course. To find out please speak to your advisor for more information.

Textile Masterclass for the Wandsworth Youth Fashion Project

5_Feb_wandsworth_masterclassAfter being narrowed down to 10 successful candidates, the Wandsworth Youth Fashion Project took the creative 10 to a textile master class with Fashion Enter on Saturday (1st February).

Following their visit to The Factory the previous week, the 10 were invited back to take part in a textile masterclass after their innovative design skills and passion for the project shone through to the judges. Candidates were treated to an in-depth presentation on designers of the future, the problems that may arise and how to overcome them for their future careers. They then were able to show off their design skills further, by creating a 3 colour geometric design and adding this to their existing design before being shown how to embroider.

The candidates also had the opportunity to meet and speak to the Mayor of Wandsworth, Angela Graham.

“Today I learnt about the ethics of fashion design and future materials for the fashion industry. I enjoyed creating new design patterns from my original design.” Imogen Murphy

“I learnt about the background and issues of where our clothes come from. Also, new embroidery techniques and stitches e.g. satin and split stitch. I really enjoyed using the heat press to create my pattern.” Fahima Alim

The final 10 will go onto take part in a design masterclass on the 15th February, before being given time to use their skills gained during the classes to apply and create their designs, where they will be presented to the Wandsworth Mayor.

The winner of the project will go onto develop their skills and see their design come to life, styled and modelled in a professional photo shoot. Before going onto be displayed in Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park, alongside other top designers work.

You can find out full information on the competition and keep up to date with the project here.

Boutique Pick of the Week5_Feb_kagool

Kagool Cool…yes, really, a pack away kagool that looks good enough to pull over a stylish outfit. In the UK we have no excuse; we know rain will always be around the corner. This Labour of Love kagool can fold away into its front pocket, making it compact and light to store away in a bag. It features a drawstring hood, a panelled colour block design, a zip fastening, a central pouch pocket, long sleeves and elasticated cuffs. According to weather analysts the prediction is for a hotter and yet wetter climate in the UK. Time to invest in some quality waterproofs!
