Meet the Manufacturer
Mary Portas, and Ian Maclean managing director of John Smedley, have been announced as keynote speakers for the first-ever Meet the Manufacturer conference – to address the potential of a full-scale return of fashion and textiles manufacturing to the UK.
Day one, 11th June, will also see our very own CEO of Fashion Enter Jenny Holloway joined by Sophie Glover from ASOS to discuss Why ‘Made in Britain’ is here to stay. Their talk will be followed by further discussion and an exchange of ideas on the challenges and opportunities that manufacturing in Britain faces today.
Organised by Kate Hills, founder of Make it British, the Meet the Manufacturer conference and sourcing event will take place on 11 & 12 June 2014 at The Old Truman Brewery in London’s East End. One and two-day conference tickets can be purchased at www.meetthemanufacturer.co.uk with day one targeted at bigger brands aiming to reshore back to the UK, and day two focused on smaller companies looking to launch and build Great British brands, and work with UK factories.

Mary Portas and Jenny Holloway to speak at the conference
Kate Hills said: “We are poised at the start of a new industrial revolution in textile and clothing manufacturing, but this will only happen if retailers, buyers, brands and manufacturers get together to make it happen.
“Concern over complex supply chains and the use of unethical sweatshops, as well as rising costs overseas and quality issues has fuelled an 850% increase in demand from clothing retailers and fashion brands looking to source locally in the UK. Yet, after years of outsourcing overseas, the industry is disconnected, and more than 60% of manufacturers aren’t yet seeing the impact in terms of this demand. Meet the Manufacturer aims to change this, introduce brands to manufacturers and share knowledge and advice, so that UK fashion and textile manufacturing does indeed return.”
Further details, including the full line-up of speakers, agenda and tickets for one and both days of the conference, can be found at www.meetthemanufacturer.co.uk

A Fantastic Turn-Out for our Factory Open Day
& #Insideout Fashion Revolution Day
The Fashion Enter factory was even busier than usual last week giving the public and industry professionals a taste of Made in Britain manufacturing, Fashion Enter opened the doors of The Factory all day in support of Fashion Revolution Day 24th April.

Among the bloggers, journalist and design duo Tida & Lisa Finch attended and were treated to a tour of The Factory and Fashion Enter services, along with Jean Lambert MEP who met with Jenny Holloway for a full guided tour of the premises. Jean as Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation to Bangladesh, took a particular interest in Made in Britain and thought the tour was perfect to remember the Rana Plaza disaster and seeing how far the ethical procedures manufacturing have grown since the awareness of the collapse.
Later on in the day Yasmin Khatan of Islam Channel visited The Factory for a personal guided tour and to film Made in Britain production, live in action for some features on Islam Channel.
ASOS Open Day
Last week Fashion Enter held the first open day for the ASOS open garment technology apprenticeship.
30 candidates were narrowed down from the hundreds of applications received and invited in to take part in the first assessment day.
The 30 candidates were invited in to get a days insight to garment technology and the apprenticeship programme. Given a chance to get a true understanding on garment technology the candidates were set a number of tasks by training and development manager Wendy Coley, including inspecting faulty garments and identifying the faults, understanding and learning the difference between critical and non-critical faults and filling in a quality report, all of which would be daily tasks for the potential apprentices. Wendy then made sure those being interviewed were fully aware and understood the commitment of the apprenticeship programme discussing the role of garment technologist and being an apprentice, before candidates went on to have a one-to-one interview. The candidates have now been narrowed down to a final 15, who will go forward to second-stage interviews.
Wendy commented: “The selected candidates were very responsive to all tasks set, it’s encouraging to see and speak to such an enthusiastic group of young individuals, clearly keen to kick-start their careers.”

Last Friday evening The Garment Project opened in Pump House Gallery, London. The Garment Project, curated by Orsola de Castro is a 5 week exhibition dedicated to the creative methods involved in making clothes for the fashion industry.
The Garment Project also includes designs from a project Fashion Enter has been working on, The Wandsworth Youth Fashion Project, teaching young people the importance and procedures that go from initial sketch to final design. See full information on the Youth Fashion Project here: http://fashioncapital.co.uk/News/26510-youth-fashion-wandsworth-.html
The dresses which were recently featured in Wall Street International are displayed on mannequins with the focus and theme surrounding them on celebrating the unseen practises behind garment making. Displayed alongside finished and unfinished pieces by Ada Zandition and From Somewhere, the iconic London architecture inspired designs were met with praise from the attendees.
Keen to see project on show in its final glory members from Fashion Enter and FashionCapital popped along to The Pumphouse Gallery to congratulate the five girls and see the designs on display.

“It was a pleasure to see the girls final designs completed and displayed in a professional exhibition alongside some top designers work. The atmosphere was vibrant with family and friends mingling and congratulating all their hard work and commitment.” Keeley Smith, Fashion Enter Teacher.
