Topics:

Why wait until the end of the year to find out from your accountant just how successful you were this season? A simple Profit/Loss account is the starting point to answering these questions and helping you manage your business well.
- Recording your sales and purchases – Simple, practical, ways to record your income and expenditure that don’t take up a lot of time but do keep you in control.
- How to treat stock – How to value fabrics, trimmings and finished garments.
- VAT – Do you need to be VAT registered? Would it pay to be VAT registered?
- Cash Flow – How would your business be affected if one of your customers was late paying you? Are you sure you will be able to pay for your garments when they are ready? This section will introduce a simple cash flow tool to help you plan ahead.

The buyer is interested in designers who can do a diffusion collection adapted slightly from their main line collection for a Fashion Enter umbrella page on their internet site, this could involve anything from minor changes to a whole diffusion collection. They are looking for trend lead without being too directional or adventurous for a customer who is quite feminine. Please email Lynsay@fashion-enter.com if you are interested. The buyers’ meeting is early next week.

Adèle Cooke – Catalyst for Change, Business Doctor, Mentor & Coach
Specialist Advisor on FashionCapital Adele Cooke submits her first article for the site looking at Embracing Change..
“It isn’t the strongest or the most intelligent that survive, it is those that are most adaptable”
Charles Darwin
It may seem like a contradiction in terms but the one constant in our lives’ today is change. Like it or not, change is something that we all have to face up to if we want to fulfil our potential as individuals and be successful in our professional lives. It can be daunting to have to change an established way of behaving, to put ourselves into situations that are way outside our comfort zone but something that one of my bosses said to me years ago comes to mind. He said, referring to a particularly challenging project… “If it doesn’t give you butterflies, it’s not worth doing”.

Designer update – Sophie Davies – Woven Textiles Designer
Fashion has always been a passion of mine from an early age.
As I grew older I became increasingly fascinated with textiles: their design, construction and texture and now I am keen to take the in-depth knowledge I have gained at Brighton, specialising in woven textiles and business studies, to develop a career in a design-led environment within the marketing sector of the textile/fashion industry. From my early weekend jobs to the present I have been interested in the challenge of being part of a business and that my part within it helps to increase its profitability and success. I can demonstrate that I am well-organised, co-operative, and able to work constructively within a team or by myself.
