On FashionCapital this Week…

Our trend expert Katie Farley hand picks some statement jewellery pieces from the international catwalks this season. In news ASOS have joined the likes of M&S, Next and H&M in the promise to no longer sell any products with Angora in them. Following a recent report and video of the Angora process from PETA the pressure is now on for other retailers to follow suit. Meanwhile we have a series of in-depth interviews from Sven Eselgroth, Sven has spent the last few months touring Scandinavia and interviewing some of the coolest labels along the way. His first interview is with the denim brand Livid Jeans.

Factory Student Visit

The Factory is regularly visited by colleges and Universities looking to view and gain insight into the fashion and manufacturing industry. This week we had a visit from a group of students from The Creative & Media Studio School in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Visiting The Factory to get an insight to the working environment and the different career paths including pattern cutting, garment technology, grading, finishing and many more, along with seeing firsthand these tasks being carried out by staff of The Factory.

Students were also given a guided tour and presentation by Jenny Holloway and Jenni Sutton before an introduction to Fashion Enter’s services, including the apprenticeship programme and ASOS Stitching Academy.

The feedback from the students was fantastic, here’s what a few of them had to say:

Jessica Ainley, “I was so inspired by this visit. I feel this company could open so many doors for anyone trying to crack the fashion industry.”

Jade Walsh, “This visit was just what I needed I think this business is fantastic! I will be definitely be thinking of applying, would be great if you could expand toward Yorkshire. Thank you!”

Victoria Bryce-Chan, “Although fashion is not my chosen career path, this trip has left me feeling very inspired. It has taught me about work ethic, passion and living to fulfil a desired purpose.”

Alex Gedlek, “I feel truly inspired. I have learnt so much in the few hours I have been here I would love to get involved at some point.”

Iconclub tee shirt base fabrics are available in monochromatic colours ivory and black, from sizes extra small up to extra large. Each product features Barbara Hulanicki’s exclusive fashion illustrations and print designs, ranging in a fantastic variety of fashion colours such as metallic golds, flocked red and glow in the dark.

All of Iconclubs tees and jumbo silk scarves are made at the FashionCapital Factory in North London. On working with our CEO Jenny Holloway and the FashionCapital production team Barbara says:

“My business partner found the Fashion Studio and this was perfect as we wanted to produce in the UK as we originally did in the 60’s with Biba. At this very moment we are working with The Factory, which is very exciting and the production is fantastic, as well as having our printed scarves being finished-off at the Fashion Studio. I am so thrilled to have met Jenny Holloway!”

Youth Fashion Wandsworth wandsworth_image_strip

Call out to future fashion stars, Wandsworth’s young fashion hopefuls have been invited to hone their talent by taking part in the Youth Fashion Wandsworth project.

Young people aged 15-19 should apply now for a chance to be chosen for the scheme. Successful applicants will be taken on a fashion journey, with the chance to develop their skills in the design and creation of garments.

The young people will submit ideas for garments that will be professionally made up, then styled and modelled for a photo shoot.  The event will culminate in a high-profile exhibition at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park to show off the students’ work alongside that of top designers. The exhibition will reveal and celebrate the range of creative processes and skills involved in making the final garment that appears on the catwalk.

The project is the brainchild of the mayor of Wandsworth, Angela Graham, who has devoted her mayoral year to creating opportunities for the borough’s young people to succeed.

She is working with the council’s arts and youth teams and with Fashion Enter Ltd., which supports the garment industry as a centre for skills development. Fashion Enter staff will be helping the young people get a real understanding of what working in the fashion industry is all about, and will teach them about design, pattern-cutting, garment construction and sewing.

Fashion Enter, the largest provider in the country for fashion and textiles apprenticeship programs, will offer valuable follow-on opportunities for the young people involved, including the chance to showcase their work at a major industry event.

Cllr Graham said:

“I’m thrilled about this project. It’s a great opportunity for young people to gain experience which will be great for the CV and will help them get jobs and apprenticeships.

“All sorts of opportunities are opening up in Wandsworth in leisure, retail, hospitality, fashion and other trades, and we want our young people to be in a position to take advantage of them.”

The project will be launched in January, and the final exhibition will be promoted as part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival in May.

If you are interested in taking part, contact Justine Kenyon on (020) 8871 7037 or email jkenyon@wandsworth.gov.uk

18_dec_bethan_juliff_knitSuccess Story

Bethan Juliff knitwear piece sells out at the exclusive Browns store on South Molton Street.

Mrs Burstein founder of Browns who bought on the first meeting, very kindly gave this quote earlier this year:

“I was asked to see Bethan’s work by Nicky Kinnaird and Alan Smith (Space NK) and Colin Fenn (formally Fenn, Wright & Manson), of whose opinions I respect. I liked her, her enthusiasm and her knitting. I gave her an order for one of her cardigans – bought them, sold them and reordered them. I hope she goes from strength to strength!”

Mrs Burstein is regarded as a highly experienced authority on high end designer labels and this surely marks the beginning of a successful launch into the industry for Bethan Juliff.
