Be Business Ready for 2011

Following the success of the first series of workshops, Fashion Enter are running a fresh series of six practical workshops to help you get your business in good shape from a financial, production and sales & marketing point of view. Aimed at fashion designers who are either just starting out or have been running for a while and want to improve their business.

Dates: 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st March + 7th April 2011.

Workshop 1. Thursday 3rd March 2011.

Title: How Much Are You Really Making?

Topics:

1.       Introduction to Profit/Loss –How many garments do you have to sell before you start making money? How do you know if your prices are going to cover all your costs? Why wait until the end of the year to find out from your accountant just how successful you were this season? A simple Profit/Loss account is the starting point to answering these questions and helping you manage your business well.

2.       Recording your sales and purchases – Simple, practical, ways to record your income and expenditure that don’t take up a lot of time but do keep you in control.

3.       How to treat stock – How to value fabrics, trimmings and finished garments.

4.       VAT – Do you need to be VAT registered? Would it pay to be VAT registered?

5.        Cash Flow – How would your business be affected if one of your customers was late paying you?  Are you sure you will be able to pay for your garments when they are ready? This section will introduce a simple cash flow tool to help you plan ahead.

More dates and how to book.

The legal side of paying people to work for you

We’re all getting used to the idea that employment law can have some odd effects.  But here’s one that most people don’t realise at all:— freelancers are entitled to paid holiday, just like employees!

There’s a lot of confusing information out there about the legal side of having people work for you.  Some of it is plain wrong, and some is not well known … but is just waiting to trip you up.

Find out what works and what doesn’t.  What are the pitfalls, and how to go round them.

Christopher Head is a barrister with over thirty years experience in the employment field.  He is a specialist adviser to Fashion Enter.

This short series of chatty seminars is aimed at giving you a ‘quick and dirty’ fix – giving you the right information, and helping you use it to get the best for your business.

The first seminar is on 2nd March.

1]         How to decide: self-employed freelance, or employed?

a.           How do you decide which arrangements is best for you?

b.           Pick ‘n mix structures – some of each

c.           What are the pitfalls and things to watch out for?

d.           Having an agreement that covers the bases

e.           What happens if you don’t (tax, copyright etc)

The Collection!

Last Thursday 27th January 2011 The Collection in association with FashionCapital and EdgeModels returned to Amika, London.

After success in clubs all over London the show was set to be a success, aiming to lift winter spirits and welcome London into Spring.
The Collection is all about supporting new and emerging designers and models
The crew of dressers, choreographers, models and more arrived bright and early armed with designer collections and ready to stun the Amika clientele.

At 8pm the doors of Amika opened and fashion hungry party-goers flooded into the club picking up a drink and a cupcake or two before working the room. The night began with an hour and a half of networking which was a great, friendly environment full of chatter between models, designers, producers and many more. By the time the show began the room was rammed and the crowds were jostling to see the catwalk.

BD@FC – Bath

There’s so much going on at the Bath branch of British Designers that it’s hard to know where to begin.

We have received our first entries for the Womenswear Design Competition plus we were recently featured in the local paper ‘The Bath Chronicle’ with a great write-up and support for the competition.

New in store we have collections from Jolaby, Ceci and Emma Ewer in the ‘emerging’ room while PPQ have updated their range in the London Fashion Week space. One of our best sellers GOAT London has now moved on to our London branch – we had a great few months with them and are currently looking for new knitwear designers to fill their shoes. Coming soon…leather bags from S M Walker and Milo & Saint, spring pieces from Nina Bon Bina and something quite unexpected from cult couturier Ziad Ghanem.

While many designers are gearing up for the international catwalk circuit of New York, London, Milan and Paris we will be adding our own touch of fashion glamour to the elegant surroundings of the Assembly Rooms here in Bath. On 18th February designs from British Designers will open the Freedom Fashion Show to showcase spring’s bold block colour trend. The black tie event will be raising essential funds for the Trauma Recovery Centre due to open later this year – the first of its kind to open in the Bath area.

And that’s not all, we are very much involved with ‘Bath in Fashion’ – a week long event happening towards the latter part of March and prep is currently underway for a promotional fashion shoot due to take place this Thursday. We can’t wait to see the images already!

Until next time,

The team at BD@FC Bath

What Makes a Photo – for your Look Books!

Imagery is very important in the creative industry, especially in fashion, and fashion photography is all about the clothes, style and mood that are being represented.

Not only will these images convey the designers personality but also their design signature. So, it is important to choose carefully which images are suitable for your brand/label. There are no rules when it comes to presenting your designs/collection via an image or a lookbook, but you need to get your point across clearly and professionally.
