New Fashion Design Course to Commence at Staffordshire University

20-02-2017

staffordshire design courseThe BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree will see students develop commercial design skills, work collaboratively with other courses and gain real industry experience.

Course Leader Rachel Heeley explained: “Because of the variety that the course offers students, they might decide that they don’t want be a designer. They might want to be a fashion buyer, a fashion stylist or something else that they come across. As long as it’s in the world of fashion then we can support students to help them get the job of their dreams.

“It is definitely different to a lot of other courses out there. Our students will learn the fundamentals of fashion design but they will also gain an understanding of fashion business and professional development.”

Rachel has extensive experience in the fashion industry having run her own fashion line and has worked as a freelance events manager for prestigious events including Grand Prix and Silverstone.

Since 2005, Rachel has taught many students from all over the UK and was most recently a Fashion and Textiles Lecturer at Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

“With the combination of designing, working on fashion films and photoshoots, marketing and events management, I’ve got a broad spectrum of knowledge so if students have a particular interest I can help them purse that.

“Our students will gain a lot from this course that makes them stand out against other applicants when it comes to employment.”

The Fashion Design students will work on collaborative projects with Photography, Photojournalism and Film students, to create a professional digital portfolio. They will also have access to the Betty Smithers collection – a vast assortment of vintage 20th century pieces donated to the university. The degree also offers a flexible approach to learning with the opportunity to undertake a sandwich course, working in industry for a year.
